In a major leap toward modernizing public transportation in Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the launch of a fully automated, trackless bus service in Lahore. The Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system will run on rubber tires and is set to become the first of its kind in South Asia.
🌍 What Is the ART Bus?
The ART is a trackless, electric bus system that combines the efficiency of trains with the flexibility of buses. Each bus:
- Operates on rubber wheels
- Can carry up to 300 passengers
- Is environmentally friendly
- Features AC, CCTV, and wheelchair ramps
- Uses a modern surveillance system
This new system ensures effective public transport with low operational costs and maximum environmental benefits.
📍 ART Bus Route & Testing Phase
The ART bus is scheduled for a test run on Lahore’s Canal Road, where its performance, stability, and passenger capacity will be reviewed.
In her announcement, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the project’s long-term benefit to both commuters and the environment.
🚌 More Electric Buses Are Coming!
The CM revealed that:
- 1,100 electric buses are being prepared in China for Punjab
- The first fleet of 240 buses will arrive on August 22, 2025
- Buses will be deployed in areas lacking current public transport

To make the service affordable, the fare for these new electric buses will be just Rs. 20. The initial route will run from Thokar Niaz Baig to Jallo Morr, providing a low-cost, comfortable travel option for daily commuters.
